A standard residential window blocks most UVB and very little UVA — the longer wavelength that reaches deeper into skin and drives most fabric and finish fading. That is why the sunlit half of a rug fades and the shaded half does not.
What 99% UV Rejection Means
Quality window film blocks 99% of ultraviolet light, which is equivalent to a broad-spectrum SPF above 200 on the glass itself. Every grade of film does this — a barely-visible clear film blocks the same UV as a dark one, because UV rejection comes from the film construction, not the shade.
That decouples two decisions people wrongly bundle: how dark you want the window to look, and how much protection you want.
Fading Is Not Only UV
UV causes roughly 40% of fade. Visible light causes about 25%, heat about 25%, and humidity and dye stability the rest. That is why UV film alone slows fading but does not stop it, and why a spectrally selective film that also cuts solar heat and glare protects noticeably better on a west-facing wall of glass.

Choosing a Film for a Texas Home
If you want protection with no visible change, choose a clear or near-clear spectrally selective film — it holds the view, blocks 99% of UV, and still rejects a meaningful share of infrared heat.
If a room is genuinely uncomfortable in the afternoon, step up to a higher heat-rejection film on that elevation only. Most homes do not need the same film on every window, and quoting it that way is how a project stays affordable.
Dual-Pane and Warranty Notes
Modern low-E dual-pane units require a film rated for that glass type; the wrong film can stress a sealed unit. A 3M authorized dealer checks glass compatibility before quoting, and premium residential films carry a manufacturer warranty that in many cases includes glass breakage and seal failure.
